Vilmart & Cie CHAMPAGNES

The Story

Helen, the Wine Expert at Fine Wine Works has always been a Krug girl, (so never a “cheap date”) and knows that what makes that particular champagne “special” and very different is the use of oak – wines fermented in small barriques without malolactic fermentation and with serious quantities of reserve wines from older vintages to give ultra fine bubbles, aromas of dried fruits and toasted nuts and a profoundly rich palate. Very few champagne houses follow this path, preferring the purity of stainless steel for first fermentation BUT (and here’s the exciting part), there is a small Grower Champagne which most people won’t have heard of but which commands an almost cult following from those in the know.

Vilmart & Cie from Rilly–la–Montagne have been producing their distinctive Champagnes since 1890 from their own organic and bio-dynamically farmed Premier Cru status vineyards and use larger oak “foudres” for all their non vintage Cuvées and smaller 225 litre “barriques” for their vintage and premium wines. Owner and winemaker, since taking over from his father in 1990, Laurent Champs has now appointed FWW as Sole Representatives of Vilmart on the Cote d’Azur.

grand cellier brut nvGrand Cellier Brut NV

Price: 36.00€

The blend here is 70% brioche toasty Chardonnay & 30% Pinot Noir. Pale gold, with almonds and hazelnuts on the nose then a fresh citrus explosion of tangerine and grapefruit and crystalised lemons.

This champagne would improve in bottle for a few years – if you can resist its youthful charms now!

Robert Parker calls it “a breathtaking Champagne at this level” 92 points, The Wine Advocate

cuvée rubis rosé nvCuvée Rubis Rosé NV

Price: 45.00€

Mostly cask aged Pinot Noir (90%) with a small addition of Chardonnay to give freshness and elegance. An incredibly friendly wine with Chambolle – like fragrance and perfumed fruit which is quite striking.

Rosé champagne is all the rage at the moment but this has so much more to it than being just part of a fad. You won’t find a richer, finer or more regal pink fizz around – it is like the dewiest, purest strawberries you ever ate!

grande cellier d'or 2002Grand Cellier d’Or 2004 / 5

Price: 49.00€

The first in the vintage line up and so fermented in barrique. Brioche and vanilla are the first notes that strike then exquisite apricot flavours. Fresh yet nutty, this delivers striking complexity and length.

No wonder that top sparkling wine writer, Tom Stevenson says of Vilmart that they are “ the greatest Grower Champagne I know”.

cuvée creation 1999Cuvée Creation 1999

Price: 60.00€

Here all the juice is used (as opposed to the Coeur de Cuvée) but then given a longer period of bottle age. The Chardonnay fruit is particularly evident: tropical fruit, passion fruit, iris root and wet stones.

A tranquil and dignified wine with exquisite purity and a supreme long finish.

coeur de cuvée 2000Coeur de Cuvée 2001 / 2

Price: 75.00€

The finest selection and the unsurpassed king of the Vilmart range from 50 year old vines, this is the one critics acclaim as a “mini – Krug”. Kirsch and coffee compliment the grassy vanilla scents, more tropical fruit on the palate and taut tingly acidity as the backbone. Balanced like a true diva!

Robert Parker gives it 94/100:
“Literally made from the “heart” of the juice. This is a richly textured, intense wine loaded with ripe fruit and sweet toasted oak.”

Richard Juhlin, author of “4000 Champagnes” says the Coeur de Cuvée 2000 is Vilmart’s “most brilliant star. Hunt like a demon for the scarce 5000 bottles made”
